Behind The Scenes 2017 Ford GT Design

Unveiled at the North American International Auto Show in January of 2015, the 2017 Ford GT was a smash hit! With an almost entirely carbon fiber chassis tub and bodywork that has been hand-laid, this monster is not just a example of beauty but hand made craftsmanship as well.  That carbon fiber drops the weight on this vehicle down to astronomically low levels, so much so that chief engineer Jamal Hameedi said the GT is targeting the "best power-to weight ratio of any car on the market."  Although Ford has yet to reveal the actual weight, Ford has promised to squeeze more than 600 horsepower out of the Ecoboost V6. The new Ford GT also has some groundbreaking technology to bluster its performance.  The 2017 Ford GT features an active aero rear spoiler, which includes an air-brake function.  The wing can both rise vertically and tilt, its horizontal surface angling upward to capture extra downforce and drag when needed.  The suspension is also unique to a production car, riding on what Ford calls an "active" suspension, the GT can lower itself at speed for stability and better aerodynamics.  A button in the can can also lift the front end when aced with inconsiderately designed driveway ramps and speed bumps.  What good would all of this power be if it can't stop?  Ford has placed carbon-ceramic Brembo brake rotors and calipers to give the GT stopping power while minimizing weight.  One of the most unique pieces of design built into the the 2017 Ford GT is the "fuselage" channels that force air to bend and direct air flowing around the car to the rear spoiler creating downforce.  Also built into rear of the car are intake tubes on each side.  Each hollow panel houses piping that flows from an air-to-air intercooler ahead of each rear wheel (visible through the large vents on the fenders.)  Intake air is scooped up from beneath the GT and compressed in each turbocharger, and then shot through the intercoolers before twisting its way up the winglets and down into the engine.  After passing through the fender mounted intercoolers, the newly heated air then flows to the Ford GT's tail, where it exits through the centers of the taillights.
