First car in this category for me(downsized) I have limited mobility and find the Soul easy to get in and out The X-line has an aggressive look. So far very happy… - 3.0
An "almost great' car
By Jaysauls | on Tuesday, January 05, 2021
I had a 2012 base model Soul that I absolutely loved. For a base automatic it was well optioned. I had it until a few years ago when the electronics turned to junk, sold it, but always wanted another. So I bought a 2021 base model with manual transmission. I was a bit disappointed with the fact that the base doesn't come with key fob, cruise control or Sirius XM radio, all previously included on my 2012 base model. This one is much roomier, quieter, heavier and definitely feels better made. Everything is fine except the transmission. Gears 2-6 are great, 1st gear has to be the WORST gear-range of any manual I have ever driven. And this includes the old '3-speed on the tree', school buses, heavy construction trucks, tractors...you name it! 1st gear winds out at about 25mp. The RPMS are screaming and car is barely moving. If you redline it you can hit 40mph. Wow. And 1st gear is extremely tempermental. You are either riding the clutch or stalling the car. There is very little room in the gas/rpm range to drive. I start of most of the time in 2nd gear if there's any slope to allow the car to move. Once out of 1st, everything is fine. 5th and 6th gear have enough torgue to keep the car moving at interstate speed without having to shift. Because of the 1st gear issues I won't keep this car but about a year. If 1st gear had a bit more 'ooph' to it, or could wind out a bit longer, it would be a blast. As it it, it really kinda sucks.… - 5.0
2020
By Kelli | on Friday, December 25, 2020
This is my 2nd soul, had the 2015 previously. Both were manual transmission, and the 2020 has more power. Hard to believe, and i checked the math twice, but i have hit 48 mph twice on this car. Nothing wrong with the tranny, its all in how you work the clutch. Keeps getting better and better. The cost is the only negative factor, but i think all cars are too expensive today. That being said, the soul is actually more economical than other cars out there and the mileage cant be beat.…
